“Which is the best plywood?” is the wrong question, and it is the question almost everyone asks. There is no single best board, because a bedroom wardrobe and a kitchen sink cabinet are not the same problem. The board that is right for one is either overkill or a slow failure in the other.

The better question is: best for what, in which room, carrying what?

First, what actually separates good plywood from cheap plywood

Four things, none of which you can see from the face veneer:

Core quality. Look at the cut edge of the sheet. In good plywood, the layers are even in thickness, tight against each other, and free of gaps or voids. Overlaps, gaps and patched veneers all mean weak spots — and a void directly under a screw is a fixing that will not hold.

The glue line. This is what decides whether the board survives humidity. It is invisible, which is exactly why grade certification exists — it is the only proxy a buyer has.

Timber species and density. Denser timber holds screws better and resists dents. Oswin Ply Club, for example, is made from 100% Gurjan (Dipterocarpus), a dense hardwood.

Calibration and flatness. A board sanded to consistent thickness sits flat and laminates cleanly. An uncalibrated board shows every high spot through the laminate.

A cheap sheet can look identical to a good one on the shop floor and differ on all four counts.

Match the grade to the room

This is the decision that matters most, and it is simpler than it is usually made to sound.

The rule of thumb for Chennai and the wider South Indian coast: if you are undecided between two grades, take the higher one. Ambient humidity here does over years what a spill does in minutes.

Thickness by component

Grade handles moisture. Thickness handles load and span.

The shelving row is where most furniture disappoints its owner. An 18 mm shelf spanning four feet, loaded with books or crockery, will visibly bow. The fix is a mid-support or a switch to block board, never a thicker shelf alone.

Room by room

Wardrobes

The carcass sits in a dry room, so MR grade is adequate and spending up buys nothing. Put the money into thickness and into shutters instead. Full-height shutters are the failure point: heavy, unsupported, hanging off hinges. Block board is worth considering here purely because it is lighter for the same thickness, which reduces hinge strain (our Block Board vs Plywood guide covers when to switch).

Watch the back panel. A 6 mm back tacked on is fine structurally, but if the wardrobe sits against an external wall, that thin back is the least protected part of the unit and the first place damp arrives.

Kitchens

Everything changes. The kitchen has standing water, steam, heat and cleaning chemicals, and cabinets there are expected to last a decade or more.

• Carcasses: BWP.
• Under the sink: marine grade. This one cabinet takes more water exposure than the rest of the kitchen combined.
• Countertop substrate: 19 mm, BWP minimum.
• Seal every cut edge. An unsealed edge is an open path into the core, and it is where kitchen units almost always begin to fail.

Beds and seating

Load-bearing, but dry. MR grade at 19 mm for frame members. The consideration here is screw-holding rather than moisture, because a bed is assembled, disassembled and re-tightened over its life — which means core density matters more than grade.

Bathroom vanities

Marine grade, no exception, and seal every edge and cut-out. This is the harshest position in a home for a wood panel, and it is also the one most often specified down to save money.

Five checks before you buy

1. Look at the cut edge for even layers, no gaps, no overlaps.
2. Find the ISI mark and read the standard number beside it — the number tells you what was actually certified.
3. Check the sheet itself carries brand markings, not just the shop’s signage.
4. Take a GST invoice naming product, grade and thickness.
5. Be suspicious of a price well below every other quote for the same nominal grade. In a category where quality is invisible, price is the tell.

The short version

Grade by zone. Thickness by span. Never economise on the kitchen or the bathroom, and never pay marine-grade prices for a bedroom wardrobe. Most homes need two or three grades, not one.
