Best Plywood for Kitchen Cabinets: Choosing the Right Grade

September 23rd, 2026

Which plywood is best for kitchen cabinets is one of the highest-stakes material decisions in a home, a kitchen sees more daily moisture, heat, and steam than almost any other room, and plywood kitchen cabinets built from the wrong grade show it within a year or two. This guide covers grade selection by cabinet zone, thickness, and where marine plywood actually earns its higher price.

Why Kitchen Plywood Grade Matters More Here

Every other room in a house sees moisture occasionally. A kitchen sees it constantly, steam from cooking, splashing at the sink, condensation from appliances, and spills that are not always wiped up immediately. That is why the standard advice for which plywood is best for kitchen cabinets is more specific than for general furniture: match the grade to the exact zone, not the room as a whole.

Plywood Grade by Kitchen Zone

  • Under the sink and around the dishwasher: this is the highest-risk zone in the kitchen. BWP (boil-water-proof) grade or marine plywood is worth the extra cost here specifically, this is where cheaper grades fail first.
  • Base cabinets and countertop-adjacent units: BWP grade is still the safer standard, given splash exposure and general humidity at counter height.
  • Wall cabinets and upper storage, away from direct splash and steam: MR (moisture-resistant) grade is generally sufficient and more cost-effective.
  • Hob and stove-adjacent panels: heat resistance matters as much as moisture here, ask your dealer about the specific grade’s heat tolerance, not just its moisture rating.

A mixed-grade kitchen, marine or BWP near the sink and hob, MR everywhere else, is a common and sensible way to control cost without cutting corners where it actually matters.

What Plywood Thickness to Use for Kitchen Cabinets

  • 18mm: the standard for cabinet carcasses, shutters, and shelving that carries real weight
  • 12mm: acceptable for cabinet backs and lighter internal dividers
  • Avoid going below 12mm anywhere in a kitchen cabinet, moisture exposure makes thin panels the first thing to warp

Plywood, or a Pre-Laminated Board Instead?

Plywood is the stronger structural choice for kitchen cabinet carcasses. For visible shutters and fronts specifically, pre-laminated particle board is also worth considering, it comes finish-ready in a wide colour range, so the decision often becomes plywood for the carcass and structure, laminate or prelam board for the visible finish. See the Pre-Laminated Particle Board Guide for the full colour range and how its pricing compares.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which plywood is best for kitchen cabinets?

BWP or marine grade for zones near the sink, dishwasher, and hob, where moisture exposure is highest. MR grade is generally sufficient for upper cabinets and areas away from direct splash.

Is marine plywood necessary for a whole kitchen, or just parts of it?

Just the parts. Marine plywood is worth the added cost specifically under the sink and around water-facing appliances. Using it across the entire kitchen is rarely necessary and adds cost without much added benefit in low-moisture zones like upper cabinets.

What plywood thickness should I use for kitchen cabinets?

18mm for carcasses, shutters, and load-bearing shelving. 12mm is acceptable for backs and light internal dividers, but should not go any thinner given the moisture environment.

How much plywood do I need for kitchen cabinets?

This depends heavily on kitchen layout and cabinet count, so it is best calculated from your actual cabinet design rather than a general rule. Your dealer or carpenter can provide an exact cutting list once the layout is finalised.
