Plywood is made from thin veneers of wood peeled from a log and stacked in layers, with the grain of each layer running at right angles to the one below. That cross-graining is the entire point. Wood moves along its grain, so alternating the direction means each layer restrains the next, and the sheet stays dimensionally stable in both directions.
Block board is built differently. Its core is solid timber battens laid side by side, edge to edge, running in one direction along the length of the board. That core is then faced with veneer on both sides. Because the core is solid strips rather than glued layers, block board is lighter than plywood of the same thickness, and its strength is concentrated along the direction the battens run.
One is engineered for balance in all directions. The other is engineered for stiffness along one direction. Everything below follows from that.

The screw-holding row is the one most people learn the hard way. In block board, a screw that lands in the gap between two core battens has very little to hold on to. It will feel tight on installation and pull out under load. Locate the battens before you fix anything structural, or use plywood at fixing points.
Long horizontal shelves. A 6-foot bookshelf in plywood needs a mid-support or it will bow under load. Block board of the same thickness, with the battens running along the length, holds a straighter line.
Tall wardrobe shutters. A full-height shutter is a long unsupported panel hanging off hinges. Lighter is better — it puts less strain on the hinge and the carcass — and block board’s lower weight is a genuine advantage here.
Full-height partitions and room dividers. Same logic: long vertical span, weight matters, and the panel is essentially a big flat sheet doing nothing but staying flat.
Long tabletops and counter substrates. Where the span is long and the load is spread.
Oswin’s block board is manufactured to ISI 1659:2004, using kiln-seasoned, preservative-treated high-density timber from sustainable plantations — the seasoning matters here because a batten core made from unseasoned timber will move as it dries, and that movement telegraphs through to the face.
Kitchen carcasses. Lots of small panels, lots of joinery, lots of fixings, and a wet environment. Plywood in an appropriate grade wins on all four counts.
Anything in or near water. Kitchens, bathroom vanities, utility areas, coastal exposure. This is a grade question rather than a board-type question, but boiling-water-proof and marine grades are a plywood category. Oswin Ply Club, for instance, is marine grade to ISI 710:2010, made from 100% Gurjan.
Drawers and small components. Cutting a block board sheet into small pieces is inefficient and unpredictable, because you cannot control whether a cut lands on a batten or a gap.
Curved and shaped work. Thin plywood bends and can be laminated into curves. Block board cannot.
Anything taking heavy fixings. Wall-hung units, sliding track, TV mounts, heavy hinges.
Prices move constantly with timber and resin costs, so treat this as a relationship rather than a rate: for a given thickness, block board and plywood in comparable grades sit in a similar bracket, with the real difference driven by grade rather than board type. A marine-grade plywood costs considerably more than an interior-grade one, and that gap is far wider than the gap between block board and plywood.
Which means cost is rarely a good reason to choose between them. Choose on span, fixings and moisture, then choose the grade your budget supports.
